MAC Stereo Rose Mineralize Skinfinish Review
A brief background on this product—it was first released as part of a limited edition collection in 2010. There was huuuge hype over it then, and it seemed to be one of the most coveted of MAC items. This year, it’s been re-released, as part of the Apres Chic Collection, and I had to have it, simple as that. Here are my thoughts on Stereo Rose.
From the MAC website:
A luxurious velvet-soft powder with high-frost metallic finish. Smoothes on: adds buffed-up highlights to cheeks, or an overall ultra-deluxe polish to the face.
Stereo Rose – coral with golden/bronze shimmering nuances.
The Stereo Rose Mineralized Skinfinish contains 10g or .35 oz of product. It costs $30 on the MAC website, and is priced PhP 1750 at local MAC branches, where it should be available already. Because I didn’t want to risk missing it, as limited edition collections get sold out at MAC stores pretty quickly, I preordered my Stereo Rose from Carefreeshopper, a favorite and trusted online shop, for roughly the same amount.
Stereo Rose looks gorgeous in the pan, the way a lot of the MAC Mineralize products do. It also looks rather orange in the pan, with fine golden veining. The first photo in this article looks too orange, but the photo below is color-accurate. When swatched, one will see how frosty the finish of it looks.
MAC Mineralized Skinfinishes can be used either as highlighter only, or blush only, or both, depending on the shade and your skin tone. MAC also recommends using it as an all-over face product, but these are way too shimmery for that! It can also be used as an eyeshadow, if you’d like, though I don’t do that with mine. The color of Stereo Rose makes it mostly a blush, though to me, it’s a blush and cheek highlighter in one—there’s a noticeable sheen to it that I don’t really need to add any more highlighter to my cheek anymore.
Swatched in direct sunlight
I like to apply this with the MAC 129 Brush, because that brush has just enough fluffiness and bristly-ness to blend the frosty finish of Stereo Rose well. I think people also use a duo-fiber brush to apply this. Not a lot of Stereo Rose is needed for each use because using too much of it can make it look too shimmery, which is the case with a lot of Mineralize Skinfinishes.
MAC Stereo Rose on my cheek
On my cheeks, Stereo Rose is a surprisingly soft color. On my NC 35 skin tone it’s a soft, sheer coral with a noticeable, but not over-the-top or too-frosty sheen to it. It’s quite pretty! And I love it. I don’t find the color or finish of it too dramatic or harsh, and it’s easy for me to wear during daytime. I think Stereo Rose would look good on skin tones NC 25 onwards. I also think it would look especially nice on warm skin tones. On very light or just light complexions this may look orange or too warm. It’s an ideal shade for summer, but I think I can and will wear it pretty much year-round.
I do not find the Stereo Rose Mineralize Skinfinish challenging to blend. It has a fine, smooth texture and it’s not gritty at all. It doesn’t apply or blend patchy on me, and I get about 5 hours or wear out of it. It does emphasize pores but not too much that it becomes unwearable for people with enlarges pores on the cheeks, in my opinion. However what it can emphasize are little bumps or uneven texture on the skin, so beware, but then most shimmery finishes do that.
Pros:
- Gives a pretty, soft wash of color and a nice sheen on the cheeks.
- Flattering on my skin tone.
- It doesn’t seem to make the pores on my cheeks even larger or more obvious.
- Not hard to blend.
- Has pretty good staying power on me.
- It doesn’t turn darker or orangey on my skin.
- It doesn’t break me out.
- It doesn’t fade in patches or unevenly.
- It’s locally available.
- Contains a lot of product.
Cons:
- It’s limited edition.
- It’s expensive.
Overall:
I was super excited about Stereo Rose and I’m not disappointed! A must-try from MAC and I can see why it got a lot of hype. However, I’m not gonna say that it’ll suit everyone, or that everyone will like it. That still depends on your skin tone and preferences in powder finishes.
